“STOWED WITH LAVENDER”
LABOUR’S SOCIALISM MISS MELVILLE ACTIVE For two hours Miss Ellen Melville, Reform candidate for Roskill, addressed on overflowing meeting at Dominion Road last evening. At the end of the meeting a motion was moved suggesting that the time had come for a change of Government. This was varied by an amendment expressing confidence in the candidate. “The voting is a draw,” declared the chairman, Mr. A. M. Bryden, deputy - Mayor of Mount Eden. Attacking the Labour Party, Miss Melville said it was now saying little about its Socialism, having “stowed it away in a safe with lavender.” The real issue of the day, when all election talk was robbed of its “hot air and millions,” was whether the British constitutional system of land tenure was to be preserved or supplanted.
Sir Joseph Ward’s fantastic borrowing scheme showed him to be out of touch with the times and tragically misled. In a brief reference to today’s poll on the transport question, Miss Melville advocated the formation of a transport board.
