“DANGEROUS MEASURE”
MENTAL DEFECTIVES BILL CRITICISED MR. DONALD’S CAMPAIGN I To a packed audience in the parish hall of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre last evening, Mr. J. B. Donald, United candidate for Auckland East, gave an address similar to that given in St. Mary’s Hall. Parnell, the previous evening. Mr. J. H. Ansell presided, and a vote of thanks and confidence was passed. Mr. Donald again criticised Reform administration, and condemned the Mental Defectives Bill as a dangerous measure that had been rushed through by Parliament. He said the Government had failed to push ahead railway construction.
He urged the necessity for improvement in .facilities for tourists, and in the mail services with England, via Panama, and San Francisco.
The candidate objected to the Increased permits granted for country race meetings. The meetings were generally held in the city, he said, and were detrimental to trade. He devoted some time to the question of unemployment, but stated that his party was not against immigration when the country could safely absorb migrants. At the conclusion the candidate answered a number of written questions.
