The holds were flooded and the crew had lost hope when a pilot steamer came to the rescue with the tug Eagle, and towed the Hillmeade into Port Phillip Bay. The steamer Iron Baron was the first to notice the Hillmeade’s plight, and sent a radio to the lighthousekeeper.
