MYSTERIOUS FIRE

TELEPHONE WIRES CUT CONVENT ENDANGERED (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Wednesday. A serious fire is raging at the technical school at Portumna, which Princess Mary visited when she was there recently. It is feared the blaze may spread to the adjoining convent. Portumna was mysteriously cut off from telephone communication after a first appeal had been made for the assistance of the Limerick fire brigade. The distance was too great for the brigade to respond. The members of the Alhlone Garrison Brigade were summoned from a cinema, and set off at midnight on their journey of 30 miles.
