ELECTRICITY TOO DEAR
FARMERS URGE INQUIRY Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. Tho president of the Dominion Farmers’ Union, Mr. W. J. Poison, told the union executive that he was heartily in accord with a proposal to hold an Inquiry into the charges for hydro-electric power, as he was very much perturbed concerning the Dominion’s hydro-electric schemes. Mr. Poison had been informed by a member of the Auckland City Council and a prominent journalist of that city that it had been proved that power could be generated by a Diesel engine at 25 per cent, below what the Government was charging. While he was in Canada he found that the cost of hydro-electric power and lighting was far below what was being charged in New Zealand. It was time that an independent inquiry was held. It was decided to support the Chamber of Commerce in asking for an inquiry by a small technical committee.
