Toil in Tunnel for Unemployed
PRACTICAL SUGGESTION BURROWING UNDER AUCKLAND (THE SHE'S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The suggestion, often made in THE SUN, that the need for the railway tunnel under Auckland should be turned to account so that execution of the job would provide work for unemployed, and at the same time save costs on the station job by furnishing necessary filling, was repeated in the House to-day by Mr. F. N. Bartram (Grey Lynn). Mr. Bartram pointed out that it was in the interests of economical construction, both on the tunnel from the city to Morningside, and on the new city station, that the tunnel job should be put in hand at once. The tunnel job would absorb many men at present unemployed, and would save money, as was stated in the 1924 Railway Statement. The Prime Minister stated that lie regretted that the survey for the work in question was not yet completed. Had it been completed, be could have given much fuller information, and a more precise answer. However, the survey was in progress, and inquiries would be made. For Mr. Bartram’s information, he added that the Public Works Department had already been instructed to take on further men to relieve unemployment in Auckland.
