TOMATO GROWING
METHODS IN AUSTRALIA Impressions of tomato culture in Austi'alia were given by Mr. G. A. Green, secretary to the Auckland Tomato and Stone-fruit Growers' Association, at last evening’s meeting. In the leading Australian centres, much smaller quantities of tomatoes were used per head of population than in most New Zealand cities and towns. Mr. Green said he had been surprised at the relatively small quantity of indoor tomatoes grown in New South Wales and Victoria, but large quantities of outdoor fruit were produced in these two States and Queensland. From what he saw and heard of the plants usually sold, they were of such poor stamp that few New Zealand growers would plant them. Mr. W. H. Rice, senior orchard instructor in the Auckland Province, explained points in the manuring of tomatoes, and the control of diseases of the fruit.
Since the last meeting, stated the report, the association had been registered and affiliated to the New Zealand Fruit Growers’ Federation. As a result of representation, those points in the Auctioneci-s Bill to which they had objected haj been deletea.
