TRAVELLERS CELEBRATE
“ASSOCIATION DAY” AUCKLAND CLUB’S SMOKE CONCERT To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the linking up of the commercial travellers’ clubs in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, the Auckland Club held a smoke concert last evening in Lewis Eady Hall. There were visitors froin all parts of New Zealand, and from Australia and “Association Day” was celebrated appropriately. Mr. W. H. Prentis, who presided, outlined the benefits which had resulted from the amalgamation of the clubs into the United Association. They now had the finest and cheapest insurance scheme in the Dominion. Concessions had also been obtained at hotels, on coastal and intercolonial steamers, and on service cars. The amalgamation had been instrumental in promoting better feeling and greater friendship, and a member of the association was welcome in any club in New Zealand or Australia. £300,000 TO CHARITY The blinded soldiers and sailors’ fund had been founded during its career, while during the 15 years the united body had collected in money and kind over £ 300,000 for charity. The paper, the New Zealand Traveller, had also been successfully established, and the profits were devoted to the benefit funds of the various clubs. Three toasts were honoured—“The United Commercial Travellers’ Association,” proposed by Mr. Robert Burns, the patron, and responded to by Mr. Prentis: “Transport,” by Mr. L. W. McGlashan, a past president, and replied to by Mr. E. Casey, divisional superintendent for New Zealand Railways; and “Past Presidents,” by Mr. I. Brown, a vice-president, and replied to by three past presidents, Messrs. A. Thompson, G. W. McLean, and H. J. Clifton.
