Poultry Expert Shows Detractors To be Wrong
English Journal C O7l fir ms His Standing As Authority BOOMERANG LETTER The poultry expert for THE SUN, Mr. G. H. Ambler, to-day has a last faugh on those who have sought to challenge his standing in the poultry world. Recently he was subject to an attack by a New Zealand newspaper, but he has at least one private detractor. Mr. J. H. Hayes, of Pleasant Road, Glen Eden, wrote on June 30 to the editor of “The Poultry World Annual,” London, saying that Mr. Ambler had been “posing as a poultry expert” and asked for information concerning him. The reply he got from the editor won’t make him as happy as Mr. Ambler. The editor, in addition, seeing that the attack on Mr. Ambler’s credentials was some concern of The Sun, forwarded a copy of the correspondence to this paper. The correspondence, which speaks for itself, is as follows: The Editor, August 4, 1928. “Auckland Sun,” Auckland, N.Z. Dear Sir,— I enclose you a copy of a letter I have had from Mr. Hayes, of Auckland, and my reply thereto. I think it only right that you should know the truth concerning Mr. Ambler. Personally I am amazed that anyone should question his authority as a poultry expert. Yours faithfully, £>, C. A. HOUSE, - Editor. 5 ’ f f- Pleasant Road, Glen Eden, Auckland, New Zealand, June 30. 1928. The Editor, “The Poultry World Annual,” Link House, Fetter Lane, London. Dear Sir,— A man by the name of Geo. H. Ambler turned up in this country several years ago, from, I believe, Church Fenton in Yorkshire, posing as a poultry expert, Crystal Palace winner, etc. He may be all he claims to be, but nevertheless suspicions are being aroused concerning him. He has secured positions on several newspapers here, and I enclose for your perusal one of his contributions to the Auckland Sun, a paper with one of the largest circulations in the country. After you have read the article enclosed, I shall be glad if you will peruse the article on pages 74 and 78 in your “Poultry World Annual” for 1925, by B. Birkhead, hon. secretary British Black Leghorn Club—compare the two —and oblige by letting me have your opinion, and also any information you can as to this man Ambler. Yours faithfully, J. H. HAYES.
J. H. Hayes, Esq., Pleasant Road. Glen Eden, N.Z. Dear Sir, — I have your letter concerning Mr. Ambler. I have known him for about 40 years, and there is no question whatever about his being a poultry expert. It is perfectly true that he has won cups and specials and first prizes galore in this country at all our best shows, including the Crystal Palace. If I had to give my personal opinion about him 1 should say there is no one in New Zealand who knows more about poultry-keeping than G. H. Ambler. I know not for what reason you have written to me, but I am sending a copy of your letter to the Auckland Sun.
I know not why you call my attention to the article by Mr. Birkhead, as you do not say, but Mr. Ambler has far more experience than Mr. Birkhead, while apart from that it is not at all unusual for breeders of birds—whether they be Leghorns or any other breed—to hold different opinions. If you want my honest opinion of Mr. G. H. Ambler, it is that he is a thoroughly capable poultryman and as honest as he is capable and practical. Yours faithfully, C. A. HOUSE, Editor.
