Thousands of spectators watched a thrilling road race for the Boiliot Cup at Boulogne. Several capsizes occurred, none of which was fatal. The race was over a triangular course of 23 miles 840 yards, which was covered 12 times.

Captain Malcolm Campbell, driving a French Bugatti car, broke the lap record with 19m 15s, equal to 721 miles an hour. Detilleux, in a Bugatti car, covered the sixth lap in the world’s record time of 18m 395, equal to 75.125 miles an hour. The ninth lap saw a desperate

struggle between Detilleux and Campbell, wlio retired after Detilleux had beaten his record. Detilleux was robbed of victory owing to a wheel of Ms car collapsing.

The result was: Ivanowaki, in an Alfa-Romeo car, 1,500 centimetres, 1. Time, 4h 34m 35 2-ss. Speed, 67.75 miles an hour. Rousseau, Salmson car, 1,094 centimetres, 2. Time, 4h 34m 54 2-ss. Marinoni, Alfa-Romeo ear, 1,500 centimetres, 3. Time, 4h 3Sm 38 2-ss.

A crash compelled Captain Campbell to retire. He did not dare to slow down, although his brakes were failing, because Detilleux was close behind in a higher-powered machine. Campbell’s car hit a bank and jumped 6ft. into the air. An axle was bent, but Campbell was not hurt.
