DRUNKARD WHO DROVE OFF
“ONLY THREE LONG HANDLES”
FINED £ls AND LICENCE CANCELLED
(From Our ' Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day.
“Knowing that he was the driver of the motor-car, Constable Kirby warned him, but defendant ignored him and drove off,” said Senior-Ser-geant Sweeney in the Police Court today, when Martin Bourke, storekeeper, Claudelands, was charged with being drunk while in charge of a car. When arrested later, defendant denied he was drunk, and demanded to see a doctor. Medical testimony was to the effect that defendant was not properly drunk, but was unsteady. Mr. J. F. Strang, for the defendant, pleaded guilty and said defendant required a car for business. He was not a heavy drinker, and had only had “three long handles.” Mr. F. W. Platts, S.M., described the offence as serious and imposed a fine of £ls. Accused’s licence was cancelled and an application for suppression of his name was refused.
