PAPATOETOE AFFAIRS
PREPARING FOR BOARD ELECTION On the recommendation of the Works Committee of the Papatoetoe Town Board last evening it was decided to subsidise Mr. R. Corbett to the extent of £l2 10s in connection with the laying of concrete slabs on the footpath fronting the Central Theatre. The question of granting compensation to Fireman Sliortt, who was injured in a recent fire, was left in the hands of the Fire Brigade Committee and the chairman. A petition signed by a large number of ratepayers of Great South Road and surrounding streets, asking for the board’s support to have the letter-box in front of Hunter’s store replaced under the jurisdiction of the Papatoetoe Post Office, instead of Otahuhu. was approved, and the clerk was instructed to write to the department in support of the request. Mr. J. Goddard, the retiring foreman , was the recipient of a cheque from the board, in recognition of hfe seven years* service with the board. Mr. F. M. Waters, chairman of the Manukau Coiinty Council,, attended, and gave a comprehensive report of the conference between the local bodies and the City Council, regarding the transport question, and advised the board to be represented at the next conference. * * * Despite the unfavourable weather last evening, the Papatoetoe Literary and Debating Society, held a very enjoyable evening in the Methodist HalL Mr. F. U. Leonard presided, and a number of Kipling’s works were dealt with. Readings were given by Miss Leah Roseveare, Mr. J. Sandford and Mr. X. H. Tunnicliffe. Songs were sung by Miss Ruby Wallace and poems were given by Miss Rita Grin ter, Mr. F. H. Leonard, Miss Leah Roseveare, Miss R. Wallace and Mr. C. A. Moore. * * * Keen interest is being shown in the forthcoming elections for the position of commissioners for the Papatoetoe Town Board district. The Papatoetoe Ratepayers’ Welfare League recently announced a ticket of five to contest the seven vacancies. On Saturday evening a meeting was held of the supporters of the present boards, and they selected a ticket of seven candidates, viz., Messrs. J. C. Bryant, J. McFarland. G. Hoskin?, A. Nettlingham, W. J. Nicholson. T. R. Smvtheman and E. S. Sorensen. In addition to the two tickets already published, three candidates have notified their intention of facing the election as independents. The district is being well canvassed, and up to the present the Welfare League has added over 100 names to the roll.
