NORTHCOTE NEWS

ROAD-WORKS SANCTIONED

The Northcote Borough Council decided last evening to make immediate payment of the Hospital Board levy amounting to £376 10s, this amount being the half-yearlv instalment. The legal and finance committee reported that the Municipal Corporation Amendments Bill embodies the suggestions made by a conference of local bodies and that it would result in an •improvement of the present Act. By five votes to four the council decided to reiterate its opposition to the Local Summer Time Bill now before Parliament and expressed the opinion that efforts should be concentrated upon legislation for the general operation of summer time throughout the Dominion. Estimates submitted to the council by Mr. A. Greville "Walker, engineer, were as follow:—Onewa main highway, £6,625 5s 6d; Northcote main road, £19,234 17s. The chairman of the No. 1 District Highways Council said the Main Highways Board advised that the proposals were satisfactory and that the subsidy on this work will be £1 for £l. He also advised that tenders should be called for the work. It was decided that the matter of calling tenders remain in abeyance, pending a further conference between the engineer and chairman of the No. 1 District Highways Council.
