STAR PERFORMER WHO “MISSED HIS CUE”
COMEDIAN GAOLED further charge to ANSWER (From Our Own Correspondent) DARGAVILLE, Friday. A comedian who was to have been the star performer at a DarSaville benefit concert has no doubt failed to appreciate the humour of his latest “appearance.” He is now serving a month in gaol for vagrancy and false pretences. John Victor Crawford arrived in Da.rga.ville last week under the pseudonym of “Victor Benno,” and was to have taken part, at his own request, in a benefit entertainment last evening. He was obliged to spend the night in the cells, however. Crawford was charged at the Police Court to-day with being idle and disorderly, obtaining £1 from Charles Creamer by false pretences, and the theft of a pair of socks, the property of the latter. Accused pleaded not guilty. Police-Sergeant Capp said that the accused had arrived in Dargaville last Friday and had engaged a room at a boarding house, telling a hard-luck story to explain his lack of money. He had become acquainted with Charles Creamer on Wednesday, and the two had some drinks together. It was alleged that he had borrowed £. 1 from Creamer during the afternoon, representing that he had money in the local post office. The pair of socks had been left in Creamer’s room and had disappeared. Accused denied any knowledge of them, although he admitted going to the room at Creamer’s request to see if there was any beer there. After hearing the evidence the J.P.’s dismissed the theft charge, but entered convictions on the remaining charges, and imposed a sentence of a month’s imprisonment. On a further charge of stealing an overcoat and other articles at Auckland accused was remanded to appear there.
