FIRE GUTS STEAMER

THRILLING ESCAPES MADE (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Times Cable. LONDON, Friday. The Hong-Kong correspondent of “The Times” says fire broke out on a British steamer, the Suitai, from Macao, half an hour after hundreds of passengers had disembarked at the former port. The petrol among the cargo caused the flames to spread with alarming rapidity and they soon enveloped the whole ship, which was reduced to a burnt-out bulk. Thrilling escapes were witnessed as the officers and crew jumped on to the wharf. The wharf was also badly damaged by the fire. There was no serious casualties.
