“BIG BILL” WINS OUT

CHICAGO SCHOOL BOOKS SIX HISTORIES REMOVED (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) CHICAGO, Thursday. The Mayor of Chicago, Mr. William Thompson, has apparently won his battle against British influence in the schools of the city. Mr. W. J. Bogan, the new superintendent of schools, has removed from the schools all the six histories which

Mr. Thompson attacked at the trial of the former superintendent, Mr. 'W. McAndrew, on the ground that the books are pro-British. The single history among those criticised which remain available to the schools is Gordy’s “History of the United States,” and that is retained with the request that a picture of the “resplendent redcoats” shall be deleted and replaced by a portrait of George Washington.
