LOANS APPROVEDBUT NOT FOR BATHS
£99,000 FOR COUNCIL The loan proposals in connection with Auckland’s public baths are still in an indefinite position. The Loans Board has approved supplementary loans for the Auckland City Council, amounting to £99,000. but has deferred consideration of the £30,000 for baths. The explanation given is that the Local Bodies* Loans Board required further departmental reports on the baths proposals, but would soon meet again to give a decision. The £30,000 is made up of £22,500 for the erection of baths at Point Chevalier, and £7.500 for filtration plants at Parnell and Shelly Beach baths. The £99,000 approved includes £71,000 as an extra 10 per cent, on the £ 710,000 secondary streets loan, the over-expenditure on which has been the subject of comment recently. The remaining £28,000 is an additional loan on tramways loans, and part of it will pay for capital works already carried out. Some of it will be spent to provide a tramway loop between Gaunt Street and the Herne Bay line, and will proceed along Halsey Street. The proposed £20,000 loan under unemployed legislation has not yet gone forward for approval. The baths loans are the only proposals which need to go before the ratepayers. “There has been no delay on the council’s part in connection with the proposals to improve the swimming facilities.” said the town clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, yesterday. “We have pushed forward these proposals as fast as we could.” The Auckland Power Board’s supplementary loan of £40,000 for the purpose of undertaking works in respect of which a loan of £400,000 was raised in 1925 has been authorised by the Local Government Loans Board. Arrangements have been made for four debentures of £IO,OOO each, at 5J per cent., and maturing in 1949, to be taken up by the Auckland Savings Bank.
