EARLIER COUNTRY FIXTURES
THE Northland Trotting Club appears to have a roving commission each year as regards fixing a date for its annual trotting function, and latest reports state that an effort will be made to stage the proceedings this year on October 22 (Labour Day). The club is adopting a wise policy in getting in early and had it arranged to hold the meeting before the Auckland spring carnival, which opens on October 13, it would have been further appreciated by owners throughout the province, whose candidates are not yet eligible for the big fixtures. Owners and trainers could do with a country fixture just before the Auckland meeting, and another between the latter and the Otahuhu spring to give then a chance of qualifying for the tighter classes. However, if Whangarei cannot race before the Auckland spring carnival, it should receive every support in its mission of putting on a day’s sport between the •Wo functions at Alexandra Park.
