JACKIE AUDUBON HAS DONE WELL

AUCKLAND SPORTSMAN TURNED DOWN CHANCE TO PROCURE PACER

One Auckland light-harness enthusiast allowed a golden oportunity to slip past when last Christmas he turned down an offer to purchase Jackie Audubon at a moderate figure. At that time J. J. Kennerley’s pacer had just won a race and was on a 2.21 mark. The race won by Jackie Audubon was at the New Brighton December fixture, his share of the proceeds being £l4O. But since then the sturdy son of Great Audubon and Lady Moth has secured five more victories and a second berth, adding £1,069 to his tally, making the splendid total of £1,209 for the season, while he has improved his handicap some seven seconds. Taking a line through Jackie Audubon’s achievements he would have proved a highlyprofitable investment for the Aucklander, who must often times feel sorely disappointed at having turned down the proposal. Getting The Money When J. J. Kennerley’s pacer won at New Brighton he tramped 3.31 for the 12 furlongs from a 3.35 mark and his next winning appearance was at Greymouth, where, after finishing out of a

place in the cup. he landed the eight and a-half furlong sprint, going 2.25 2-5 for the journey. At Forbury Park in January the Great Audubon gelding annexed the King George Handicap from a 4.41 peg, registering 4.37. The following month Jackie was handicapped on 4.36 at the Metropolitan meeting, and beat all his opponents with the exception of Zenith. Winding-up the Watch Three outs were next recorded and then Kennerley’s improving candidate won a 10-furlong heat at Ashburton, going 2.47. This was at the April fixture, and he returned to Ashburton on June 9, where he cleaned up a good field in the big two-mile event. Handicapped at 4.36, Jackie Audubon tramped 4.40 on a slow track, Then came the Auckland visit, where, after missing a situation in the opening event, ho gave the public a taste of his capabilities by winning the 10-furlong flutter from 36yds behind, like a real genuine horse, rewarding his supporters with a very handsome dividend. Although the track was in a bad state Jackie Audubon reeled off the journey in 2.56 4-5. He was given a chance on the concluding day in the Adams Memorial Cup, but failed to get in the money. The Great Audubon gelding is now in his sixth year and still improving, so it will not occasion any surprise to find him reaching the highest grade before the new season terminates. Jackie Audubon will be in fine form for his engagements at the forthcoming Addington carnival and he is almost sure to open his "winning account before it is over.
