ACCIDENTALLY KILLED
WOMAN STRUCK BY TRAM VERDICT AT INQUEST A verdict of accidental death v.'cs returned by Mr. W. R. McKean. SM coroner, at the inquest yesterday concerning- the death of Mrs. Louisa Buer aged 59, who died as a result of injuries received through being knocked down by a tramcar at 11 p.m. on July The accident occurred at the corner of Dominion Road and E-.vington Avenue, not many yards from Airs Suer’s home in Dominion Road. Chief-Detective Hammond said that, owing to his confusion immediately after the accident, Richard Wren motor-man of the car, had not been certain whether his car or a passing motor-car had struck the woman Wren said that he had been driving continuously for eight and a-half hours on the day in question. When nearing Ewington Avenue he had seen a woman in front of his tram. He applied the emergency brake and at the same time saw a motor-car shoot past him, hut did not see it strike the woman. Wren admitted making an incorrect statement to the police, but said that he had since altered it.' He had been driving for seven years. Cross-examined by Mr. Johnstone who appeared for the Tramway Department, Wren said he did not know at first that his car had struck the woman, but later he concluded it had done so, although he did not see the tram hit her. Chief-Detective Hammond surmised that when the woman saw the 'motorcar coming she jumped to one side running in front of the tram. The coroner said there was no doubt the tramcar, and not the motor-car struck deceased.
