NEW NORTH SHORE PARK
WORK AT MELROSE LABOUR GANG BEGINS When the laying-out of the newly-acquired Melrose Park is finished, Devonport will have another excellent play area. Work on the park was begun last week, and the men employed have been chosen from the 46 registered as unemployed at the Borough. Council office. The park, which has an area sufficient for a full-size football field, is being formed through money obtained by public subscription, and a sum of £203 granted f>y tlie Government. At the present time, energetic committees are working for the purpose of raising further funds. The name of Melrose, which was given to the district adjacent to the park, has association with Scottish history. Several of the original owners were Scots, and with memories of the stately ruins of Melrose Abbey, and Sir Walter Scott’s border stories, they gave the district that name. The immediate plan is to make a park area sufficient for a football ground, and children’s play area. The sea will be held back by speciallyconstructed clay walls, a protection quite sufficient in of the fact that only exceptionally high tides bring water to the flat.
