BOAT OR RAIL?
DAIRY SUPPLIERS’ PROBLEM BALLOT ON TRANSPORT QUESTION (From Our Oxen Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, Saturday. Whether their produce shall be sent tg Auckland by rail or steamer is a question that is troubling the suppliers of the Rangitaiki Dairy Company. The directors had decided in favour of shipping from the port of Whakaane. The suppliers there demanded a poll on the question of transporting by rail or boat. The directors have arranged for the poll, but have informed the shareholders that in the event of a majority voting in favour of rail transport they would not be prepared to remain in office to give effect to a policy which, in their opinion, was contrary to the best interests of the company. They state that a saving of £I,OOO a year would be effected on butter and shooks alone by shipping through the port, while the saving in freight on general merchandise and factory requisites would be from £3OO to £SOO. RAILWAY MANAGER’S APPEAL .Mr. H. H. Sterling, general manager of railways, who was accompanied by Mr. D. Rodie, commercial manager, and Mr. A. W. Wellsted, business agent at Auckland, in response to an invitation from shareholders who favoured rail carriage, addressed a meeting of 100 suppliers to-day. Mr. Sterling dealt with the direct tors’ statement and claimed that the railway provided the better service for the carriage of butter. He said that the directors had carefully avoided all arguments in favour of carriage by rail while emphasising those in favour of the boat.. Co-operation had made the dairying industry, and the great co-operative transport concern of the Dominion should be supported. The saving on the carriage of cattle, pigs, maize, coal, etc., on the railway made the saving of £I,OOO claimed by the directors fade out of sight. On ethical and economical grounds he urged that the railway should be supported, for the railway had unlocked the Rangitaiki Plains.
The result of the ballot will be known next Saturday.
