EXPLOSION IN GRATE

WOMAN HIT IN EYE COAL THROWN INTO ROOM (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, Saturday. Severe injuries to the left eye were received by Miss West, of Te Kuiti, on Thursday, as the result of an explosion of something in the fire before which she was seated. The explosion was apparently due to some explosive in the coal, and the contents of the fire were scattered about the room. A piece of the coal struck Miss West a glancing blow on the eye, the glasses she was wearing at the time being undamaged. She was taken to the Hamilton Hospital for observation.

The injury is not as serious as was at first thought, though Miss West is still in the Hamilton institution. Her girl assistant, who w'as in the room at the time, escaped uninjured.
