INSUFFICIENT TROUT
TAUMARUNUI COMPLAINS IMPORTATION OF QUAIL Claiming that the allocation of 100,000 trout fry was insufficient, a letter was received at the meeting of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society last evening from the Taumarunui Sub-society, who alleged that the Auckland Society was making game allocations at the expense of fish. It was decided to reply that the allegation was quite untrue and that the sub-society was receiving one-sixth of the total quota. The society resolved to forward a remit to the New Zealand conference asking the Minister of Marine to inquire into the old question of introducing trout into reservoirs. The secretary of the society, Mr. C. M. Gordon, said he had gone into the question thoroughly and, following the experience of other countries, he was certain that fish in reservoirs did no harm. The chairman, Mr. F. E. McKenzie, said that all societies should co-operate in this question. A petition for quail was received from Matamata farmers. It was stated at the meeting that permission from the Minister of Internal Affairs frr the importation of 500 Virginian quail from Norfolk Island would be sought by Mr. R. H. Bartley, on behalf of the society, when he visited Wellington next week. The chairman said that Mr. Bartley should be given the petition to show the Minister.
