MUSEUM MAINTENANCE
BILL FOR PARLIAMENT
LOCAL BODIES MUST PAY
Authority is to be sought in Parliament during the current session for the collection, by a specially constructed board, of £6,000 annually from the local bodies interested in the administration of the Auckland Museum. These local bodies in turn will be empowered to strike a special rate in their respective districts. “The Auckland War Memorial Museum Maintenance Act, 1928,” which is the full title of the measure to be introduced to Parliament, provides for the allocation of the £6,000 estimated maintenance costs upon a population basis among the contributing districts, ani* for the equitable representation of these bodies on the board controlling the museum affairs. So long as the Auckland City Council remains a contributor, it will be entitled to representation on the board by the Mayor and three councillors. Tli© three remaining members of the board are to be chosen by ballot from among the other local authorities concerned, each body having the power to nominate one member. The museum, which is nearing completion, is to cost in the vicinity of £200,000. The local bodies embraced by the Bill, are: The boroughs of Birkenhead, Devonport, Mount Albert, Mount Eden, Newmarket, Northcote, Onehunga, Otahuhu, Pukekohe and Takapuna. The road districts of Mount Roskill. Mount Wellington, One Tree Hill and Panmure. The town districts of Ellerslie, Glen Eden, Henderson. Howick, Manurewa, New Lynn, Papakura, Papatoetoe and Helensville. The counties of Franklin (including Mercer town district), Waitemata and Manukau.
