POLICE SERVICE QUESTIONS
Relative to the week-end burglaries at Taumarunui members at the monthly meeting of the Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce brought up several questions connected *with the police service in the town. In reference to information alleging that the constable on night duty was withdrawn after the departure of the midnight train on Saturday evenings, Messrs. A. S. Laird and T. P. Davis were appointed to wait as a deputation on the sergeant of police, with a view to obtaining greater police protection for the borough. Following discussion regarding the calling in of torches supplied to country constables, the chamber resolved to seek the support of all Chambers of Commerce in having electric torches supplied to all country police. It was resolved to request borough council to arrange for the continuous lighting of the town, in view of some recent happenings. The Post and Telegraph Department does not view the provision of direct telephonic communication between National Park and Tokaanu so importanly as do a large number of settlers and business houses in the central King Country. A letter was received from the department definitely intimating that the provision of the line would not be sanctioned, but the matter had been given ‘‘very careful consideration.” Owing to there being many other works presenting more urgent features favourable consideration could not be given at the present time, and it was estimated there would be a large annual working deficit. The Chamber resolved to place all data and correspondence dealing with the National Park-Tokaanu telephone line in the hands of the Tourist Department with a view to obtaining that department’s assistance. The president said he considered the line a most important one.
