Lost at Sea
YOUNG MAN JUMPS OVERBOARD TRAGEDY ON ARAWA Two days before the Arawa arrived at Colon on her journey to New Zealand, Denis Cain, aged 21, jumped overboard into the Caribbean Sea. The tragedy occurred at four o’clock on the morning of June 8. Although the vessel circled round the spot until daybreak, and every effort was made to find Cain, nothing further was seen of him. Cain was making his first voyage, and was employed as a fireman’s “peggy.” He was sleeping on the hatch. Tlie lookout man saw him jump overboard, and a few minutes afterwards one of the lifeboats had been lowered. Lifebelts were thrown into the water, with flares attached to them, but nothing could be seen of the unfortunate young man. Sharks infest that part of the sea. and it is thought that Cain would hav» had little chance. An inquest was held at Colon.
