ENTERTAINING PRINCE
COUNCIL’S QUANDARY “MONEY WOULD KEEP TWO FAMILIES FOR YEAR” The City Council spent some time last evening considering the number of cases of hardship in Auckland, against the spending of, say, £3OO to entertain the Japanese Prince Takamatsu, who will visit Auckland at the end of this month. The Finance Committee recommended that an “at home” should be tendered the Prince, Vice-Admiral Seizo Kobayashi and officers during: the visit. It was proposed that this would be the only function in which the city would be concerned. Cr. E. J. Phelan pointed out that this would probably cost £3OO, and though he realised the city’s liabilities he questioned whether this sum. which would almost keep two families for a year with a subsidy, should be spent. The Mayor said that every aspect had been considered, but the visitor was a high member of the royal family, and the city had to do something. The scheme of an “at home” was inallv agreed to, though councillors admitted that they were in a position they would rather not be forced to occupy.
