BENZINE STORES
MANY CITY DEPOTS The storage of benzine in Auckland is by no means restricted to the Freeman’s Bay reclamation. Many thousands of gallons are stored all over the city. Last evening two firms having storage rights applied to the City Council to allow increased limits. Their prospects are not bright. Permission was sought by Milliken and Brentnall to install two oil-fuel tanks at the rear of the premises of Robertson Bros, in The Strand, Parnell, the intention being to build them into the cliff. The Inspector of Dangerous Goods reported that the premises were already licensed to carry 104,000 gallons, and irregularity of shipments caused the limit frequently to be exceeded. In view of the general restriction of stora.ge to Freeman’s Bay reclamation the inspector thought the council should give serious consideration before granting the licence. Storage in upright tanks let into the cliffs was quite contrary to the by-laws. The inspector also reported adversely on an application by Winstone, Ltd., for permission to store 25,000 gallons of motor spirit on their property off Hohipere Lane, the section being situated on a filling at the top of Grafton Gully. The first application was referred to the Works Committee, and the second declined outright.
