NEW SPORTS GROUND

OPENING AT DEVONPORT From to-day pupils of the Devon port Public School will have a new basketball ground and tennis court, secured largely by their own efforts. Yesterday afternoon the area, which is on the south slope of Mount Victoria, was opened by Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board. The Devon port Domain Board granted the site and construction work at a cost of about £l6O was carried out by the school committee. To complete wire-netting fencing, £BO more is required. Speakers at the opening were Mr. Burns, Mr. E. Aldridge, Mayor of Dev - onport, NJr. J. Kew Harty, senool committee chairman, Mrs. X. E. Ferner, vice-president of the Auckland Basketball Association, and Mr. T. Lamont. Mrs. Ferner set the ball in motion for an exhibition game of basketball.
