BIRKENHEAD SATISFIED
HOSPITAL REPRESENTATION MEETING OF COUNCIL The Birkenhead Borough Council decided last evening to inform the Palmerston North Council that it is satisfied with the basis of representation on hospital boards, this being by the direct vote of electors. Four permits for new buildings were granted. The waterworks engineer reported that 3,183,000 gallons of water had been used during June. Dr. Chesson, medical officer of health, wrote drawing attention to the fact that certain kinds of businesses in the district were not licensed according to the Health Act. The Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, said that as Birkenhead paid part of the inspector’s salary, he should see that these businesses complied. Application was recently made to the No. 1 District Highway Council to subsidise the widening of the bitumen construction of the main highway from the Birkenhead wharf northwards, at a cost of £BBO, and five chains of the unfinished Onewa main highway at a cost of £l9O. Subsidies for maintenance works were required for Glenfield Road, £688; Hauraki Street, £323; and Onewa Road, £172. A reply from Mr. J. McEnnis, chairman of the District Council, stated the Main Highways Board regretted it was unable to subsidise the cost of widening the existing bitumen penetration work on the main highway through Birkenhead. The board was prepared to subsidise the cost of widening the pavement, by tarsealing, on the basis of £1 10s for £l, provided the board’s subsidy would not be paid on any work which would have the effect of making the width of the completed pavement greater than 30ft. It was resolved to make further representations to the No. 1 District Council regarding the construction work proposed.
