TWO FIRST-CLASS FIGHTS

BOUTS FOR FRIDAY GOOD AMATEUR SUPPORTS Scientific boxing should be seen in plenty at the Town Hall to-morrow evening when the two first-class 10round bouts arranged by the Northern Boxing Association will be staged. The two Aucklanders engaged, Matt Hatton -and Frank Taylor, are both in splendid condition. Carroll, of Wanganui, who will be Hatton’s opponent, is also reported to be in good fighting trim. Carroll and Larsen are expected to arrive in Auckland to-day. Both contests should be clever exhibitions of the scientific side of boxing, although it should not be of the tap-and-run variety as all the boxers engaged have a punch and know Low to use it. The Hatton-Carroll fight will probably create the most Interest as fans will be seeing Hatton after a long rest and he will be opposed by a good boxer, who will be keen to spoil the Aucklander’s undefeated record. Hatton is a strong fighter with a knockout in one punch, but he is by no means devoid of boxing ability as well. As Carroll is reported to be a fast and clever boxer with a hard punch the contest should be full of incident. The Taylor-Larsen fight should be of much the same quality. The Aucklander made a name for himself as an amateur because of his ability both as a scientific boxer and a puncher. For a bantam-weight he possesses a tremendous punch, and combining this with his cleverness he is a great little fighter. Larsen has not been in action in Auckland before, and this will bo nis first professional contest. As an amateur his most noteworthy performance was in reaching the final of the 1927 New Zealand championships only to be defeated by Jack O’Sullivan, of Auckland, after a hard struggle. On O’Sullivan being nominated for che Olympic Games Larsen was selected to try him out, and he succeeded in defeating the Aucklander. He is stated to be of the type that fights from the gong and keeps on his man all the time. If this is correct the bout on Friday should be the goods,” as Taylor is always readv for a good fight. The amateur bouts which have been arranged also promise well. Two no vme welter-weights who show promise will be opposed. They are R. Absolum, of Otahuhu, and J. Holley, of Papakura, and according to members of the association who have seen the two in action, their display will be one of the best of the evening - . The second amateur contest will be between Martin and Peryer. Martin who has been in solid training, is in good conidtion as is needed when meeting a man of Peryer’s quality. The bout should he of the fast, hard-hitting variety which the spectator likes so well.
