DISTRESS AMONG MAORIS
APPEAL TO HOSPITAL BOARD AKARANA DEPUTATION In order to arrive at an understanding regarding the relief of destitute Maoris in the Auckland district members of the Akarana Maori Association will approach the Auckland Hospital Board at its next meeting. A deputation waited on a special meeting of the board yesterday, but owing to pressure of business it could, not be received. Mr. George Graham, a member of the association, stated yesterday it was the desire of his association to assist the board. The chief difficulty confronting the relief committee was in ascertaining whether Maori applicants for relief were genuine or not. The association desired to work with the board. Mr. W. Wallace, chairman of the Hospital Board, said he understood there was considerable distress among Maoris, especially in the Panmure district. The board had never turned away the genuine case of a Maori seeking relief.
