Naval Reserve Headquarters To be Erected
Site at St. Mary’s Bay AMPLE ACCOMMODATION A beginning will shortly be made with the erection of headquarters for the Auckland Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on a waterfront site at St. Mary’s Bay. A letter was received at yesterday’s meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board from Commodore G. C. PSwabey, commodore commanding the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, advising that Cabinet had approved the erection of headquarters and a sum for that purpose had been placed on the Estimates for the current year. The board had made the site available at a pepper-corn rentaL Although the plans are not yet finished the building will be a large one, providing 20,000 square feet of floor space. It will be of one storey with space underneath for the storage of boats. The site gives direct access to the water, down to which skids will be built for launching and hauling out the division’s craft. Within the building provision will be made for officers’ and men’s quarters, a gymnasium and a large training hall. One of two 4in. guns will be erected in emplacements in the hall and trained toward the North Shore. The guns will be used to give the reservists practice in sighting.
