Bully Beef from South Africa Used in the Great War

“SHOULD LAST FOR EVER ” “Theoretically bully-beef should last for ever,'* said Professor Sperrin-Johnson at the popular University lecture last evening, after he had explained that, from inside information he had received tchen in the Medical Corps, it seemed that tinned beef left over from the South African campaign had been issued to the troops in the Great War. “1 teas told so," he said, “and although it may make you shudder to think of it, it teas not objected to tohen it teas served up."

The professor explained that the sealing of the tins would keep the beef from putrefaction indefinitely and that precautions would have been taken to prevent chemical action between the covering and the organic matter.
