TO-DAY’S TRAINING NOTES HORSE KILLED—JOCKEY INJURED ; Sunshine favoured trainers at Ellersi lie this morning for training opera- •! tions, and an interesting morning’s work was witnessed. No visitors have yet put in an appearance at headquarters, and the work-outs were confined to local horses, who had the use of ; number one grass, the going being only fair. Training operations were marred near the close by aq unfortunate mishap during a spin over the schooling hurdles, -Spalmore falling and receiving injuries necessitating his immediate destruction. The rider, R. Eager, suffered a broken collarbone. There were several gallops registered and a good deal of jumping, but there was practicall3 r nothing that could be called an outstanding performance. Thursby at His Best A trio to provide an interesting gallop over six furlongs was Thursby, Lomint and Restaurant, the first-mentioned pair finishing on terms ahead of Restaurant, and recording 1.21 3-5 for the journey. It is doubtful if trainer R. E. Brown has ever had Thursby in such great fettle. Golden Wedding was at least three lengths in front of Segment at the conclusion of six furlongs, the last five taking 1.19 1-5, but neither was asked to do its best. Segment may forfeit his engagement in the open sprint on Saturday. That King Emerald was not out to register fast time was evident when Eager Rose finished on terms with him at t]ae end of a mile in 1.54, the first two furlongs taking 2S 3-5, and the first halfmile 58 3-5. Coming Into Form Sir Archie jumped off well from the seven furlong post, and moved over the first two furlongs in 27, being joined by his stable companion, Huiphano, at the half-mile barrier, the pair finishing with very little between them. For the seven furlongs Sir Archie recorded 1.34 2-5, the last six taking 1.21—a good gallop. A couple of jumpers in Rafferty and Pekatahi were sent over a mile and aquarter, Rafferty beating his companion by at least six lengths. The pair got to the end of round in 2.3 1-5, the last six furlongs taking 1.27 4-5. Dave and Master Doon were responsible for a good effort when the pair finished together ahead of Judge’s Box. the time for six furlongs being 1.21. Judge’s Box struck herself during the gallop, and was unable to do her best. In the Big Event Tn view of his engagement in the principal flat race on Saturday. Modest Boy was set an essay over a mile, Hyde Park joining in over the last seven furlongs. Modest Boy was timed to move over the initial furlong in 13 2-5, two in 28 4-5, three in 3 2-5, the first half-mile in 54. and the complete distance in 1.50 2-5. Lord Bruce and Llewellyn were companions over a round, recording 2.5 1-5, with the former slightly in advance at the end, although both were doing it comfortably. Blue Spear beat Killute over seven furlongs, the last six taking 1.23 3-5. Pompeius had a slight advantage over Piet at the end of five furlongs in 1.9, while Harbour View finished 40 yards in front of Good Boy at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.21 4-5, the first three furlongs taking 40 1-5. _ After schooling, Importer, Foxhound and Potoanui were associated in a .bout over seven furlongs, the first-mentioned pair being well ahead at the end. Zircon and Royal Form covered a mile, the last seven furlongs taking 1.39. A number of others were given useful tasks over various distances on the flat, and among them were: Karamu, Sulla, Abbot’s Delight, Muscari, Uralla, Rahepoto, Kamehameha, Monetize, Storm Fiend, Kyngzone and Clockwork. Over Obstacles Odin (T. Chaplin) and Uralla (Murphy) jumped four schooling hurdles, giving a safe display. Potoanui (R. Eagar), Importer (J. Sharkey) and Foxhound (J. Mepnan) were in company over four schooling hurdles. Potoanui and Importer created a favourable impression, but Foxhound did not take kindly to his task. _ Miss Alma (R. Eagar) and Kauri Park (H. Dulieu) gave satisfaction in clearing four schooling hurdles in good style. Clockwork also negotiated a similar numMarita (S. Henderson), Fane (J. Kahuwai) and Spalmore (R. Eagar) were engaged in a lesson over four schooling hurdles, Spalmore falling at the first and breaking a shoulder. Marita and Fane completed the remaining fences without mishap, the former giving the best display. Over Country Zircon (C. Regan), Rahepoto (G. Holland), Kamehameha (S. Henderson), and Royal Form (Murphy) attracted notice by their exhibition over the steeplechase fences on the flat. Nothing could be said against the efforts of Zircon and Royal Form, while Kamehameha also went nicely, spoiling an admirable display by getting in rather close to the last fence, the stone wall. Rahepoto was inclined to run about at the first two obstacles, but showed improvement at the last fence. The hunter, Tamore (C. Regan) was the only one to be given a lesson over the hill—this being his first attempt. There was nothing wrong with his work until the first fence on top of the hill was reached, where he refused, eventually jumping it, however, and also negotiating the second fence there when prevailed upon the second time. The sod wall was his downfall, for he came to grief, but was remounted, completing the course without mishap.
