Ferns and coloured streamers provided beautiful decorations for the Ohura Plunket dance, held during the week. The building was taxed to capacity and the intermingling of plain and fancy costumes presented a brilliant picture.
Prizes were won as follows: Best ladies’ costume, Airs. J. Seerup (Eastern Lady) ; best gentleman's costume, Air. A. J. Allison (Pirate). Aliss Pendlebury was awarded a second prize for the best lady’s dress. Airs. J. AlcClenaghan and Mr. IT. Cameron were the judges. Airs. Seerup, being the donor of the lady’s trophy, she generously returned it for auction to swell the Plunket takings. Air. Gill and partner won the balloon dance. * * * A birthday party in honour of Aliss Edna Hughes, of the Bank of Australasia, Taumarunui, was given to a number of young people, the hostesses being Aliss Hughes and Aliss Edna Hughes. Dancing, games and musical items provided it delightful evening’s entertainment. A "Kit Kat Club," sponsored by the married people of Taumarunui with the object of providing dances and social entertainment for the wedded people of the town, seems to have captured the popular fancy, as the opening dance was a marked success. The function was carried out by a committee consisting of Alessrs. T. P. Davis, A. E. Tomlinlon, C. Williamson, L. King and 11. Brinkman, and was held in Airs. Alurray’s new tea rooms, a place admirably suited for the purpose. Airs. Hales's orchestra provided the music, and a number of extras were generously given. Airs. Alurray supplied a delicious supper, and Airs. Blacklock (a visitor to the town) delighted with excellentlyrendered vocal numbers, to the accompaniments of Air. Tomlinson. The club's next meeting will be held in July. Whist and dancing comprised the pleasures at a most successful evening conducted by the Alanunui Ladies’ Hockey Club, in aid of their funds. Air. Brown supplied delightful music, and Mr. Cribb was AI.C. Air. N. Bradley gave a musical item. * * * The Alatiere Football Club’s annual ball attracted a large number of visitors. to a handsomely decorated hall, in which tho club colours were prominent. Competitions were won as follows: Waltzing, Aliss K. Waugh and Air. .1. Gordon; mystery dance, Aliss D. Petley and Mr. D. Margan. The judging was done by Alesdames G. Kelly and Stevenson and Mr. P. Petley. A Cinderella dance caused much merriment. AXusic was supplied by Alesdames AlcGovern and A. Rhvnd, and Alessrs. A. Iv. Alargan, Francis and C. A. Alargan. Air. Gibson carried out the M.C.’s duties. At the residence of Airs. W. Girvin, Taumarunui, the annual meeting of the local Croquet Club was held, Airs. Girvin being elected president, and Airs. E. Alanagh secretary for the incoming year. The hostess provided afternoon tea for her guests, and in the evening entertained a number of the croquet ladies to bridge. * * * Airs. Dempsey, junr., showed a practised hand in her beautiful decorative scheme for the hall on the occasion of the Retaruke Social Club’s fancy dress ball. There was a large crowd in attendance, and the function was most enjoyable. Prizes for most effective costumes went to Aliss G. Dobbs (Nig-
ger Woman) and Mr. J. Dobbs (Who Is | It?). The members of the club pro- ; vided supper. A number of women interested in the welfare of the Taumarunui Public School have proposed a plan for raising money by means of "chain afternoon teas." which has been gratefully accepted by the committee. The organisation of the scheme is in the hands of | Air. R. AY. Beresford. It is anticipated that a considerable sura will be raised, which will be utilised with the Government subsidy in paying off the debt on the new playing area. Air. E. J. Guthrie, stationmaster, of Taumarunui, who lias been transferred to Tauranga, was the guest at a meeting of the Rod and Gun dub's executive, of which he has been a member for a long time. The president, Air. J. Brown,, asked Air. Guthrie to accept a rug as a mark of remembrance, and wished him good luck. Other speakers endorsed the chairman’s remarks.
