TALKS ON HOCKEY
PARTY GIVES USEFUL HINTS An unofficial party of hockey enthusiasts, Messrs. E. J. Hewitt, F. Xicholson, A. G. Williams, H. E. Watts and G. Peace visited Papatoetoe on Thursday evening and met the ladies’ hockey team. To a full muster of players and supporters Mr. Williams spoke at length on the rules of the game, and gave hints on how to improve playing. The others showed how various movements should be made, illustrating each point on a blackboard. The president, in thanking the visitors, said he was sure play among the Papatoetoe teams would benefit as a result of the instruction in the finer points of the game given by the party. The same group is willing to talk to any of the town clubs on the same subject.

POINTS IN TOURNAMENT Points for the King's Birthday tournament have been awarded as follow: Senior grade, Y.W.C.A., 23 points; Arawa, 10; Wesley. 4; Somerville, i. and Mount Eden 0. Junior grade: Mount Eden and Papatoetoe, 12; Technical, 11$; Wesley, 2; Y.W.C.AA, $; Papakura, Y.W.C.A. B and Somerville, 0. The registrations of Miss J. Baxter with Y.W.C.A. Junior B grade team, and Miss Xewdick with Somerville Junior were approved at the last meeting of the executive of the Auckland Ladies’ Hockey Association. The Waihi Association has registered as representative colours a navy skirt and black and gold halved jerseys. Xavy skirt with red and white vertically-striped jumpers and redfend white spotted handkerchiefs as head covering was registered by the Waipa Association. Games of the collegiate section of the Ladies’ Hockey Association were to have been started on Saturday last, but were postponed for a week. Only one grade of matches will be played, six teams taking part. SENIOR B GAMES Otahuhu v. Epiphany (3.5 p.m.).— Can Epiphany check the run of success of the Otahuhu eleven? The latter team possesses a strong defence, as evidenced by the small total of goals registered by opponents this season. So far they have not proved themselves a scoring team, most of the games having been won by a small margin. Epiphany infuses plenty of dash into the game—in fact, over-eagerness has frequently spoiled good chances. Judging by performances in the second spell of the recent game with ’Varsity Colts, the side has improved greatly, and should the forwards play with the same combination it will not be surprising to see Otahuhu’s colours lowered for the first time this season. Somerville Colts v. Training College (1.50 p.m.).—Training College has not been a consistent performer this season. In the first game against Varsity Whippets, it appeared as though a solid combination would be formed, but constant changes in personnel and postponements on account of holidays has retarded progress somewhat. Somerville Colts has not fulfilled the promise of making a good senior grade team, as was sunnosed on last year’s showing-
It is unfortunate that the same team has not been able to take the field every Saturday, chiefly through accidents, no fewer than four players being away on two occasions. At the last meeting of these teams. Training College emerged the victors by an odd goal. The result of this week’s game should again close, with the winner in doubt until the final whistle.
