Cooks’ Union Warned by Judge Dethridge

EXCESSIVE FEES HINT OF NEW UNION (United P.A. — By Telegraph Copyright) Reed. 9.15 a.m. SYDNEY. To-day. Huddart-Rarker's have instructed their officers to stop receiving cargo for the Ulimarea. but if the cooks’ dispute is immediately settled a fur* ther effort will be made to get the Ulimaroa away to-morrow. Chief Judge Dethridge, resuming his hearing of the Brisbane branch's application for deregistration of the Cooks* Union, was informed that the membership fees of this union amounted to £ll 13s 6d, which he regarded as wholly excessive. It was also stated that this fee was increased by the union executive without authority of the branches. ■‘l shall want to hear good reasons in justification of this fee.” added Judge Dethridge, “if this organisation is to remain registered." Judge Dethridge asked what was proposed to be done in the event of deregistration. Counsel replied; “We shall form a new union.” The application was adjourned. MEN FOR THE BARWON The Cooks' Union' yesterday afternoon decided to supply men for the Barwon, but although a large crowd of seamen and cooks attended at the shipping master’s office the owners did not call for men. It is anticipated, however, that the difficulty will be adjusted to-morrow, and that the manning of the idle ships will then be continued. The shipowners have telegraphed to Mr. Tudehope, Federal secretary of the Cooks’ Union, from Melbourne, stating that his telegram was a distinct breach of the terms of the settlement of the strike. They said they must have an assurance that their free selection of cooks will not be interfered with. Until that assurance Is given, the owners will refuse to engage further men for any of their ships.
