FRUITGROWING INDUSTRY
STATE AID JUSTIFIED DECISIONS OF CONFERENCE Press Association. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Addressing the annual conference of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, the Hon. O. J. Haw Ken, Minister of Agriculture, said the Government help had been justified, but he hoped that as time went on, the industry would be able to do without help. He felt that the small fruits had not reached that mark where they could supply local demand. With regard to fruit diseases the Department of Agriculture was doing its best to help growers. He expressed the opinion that there was an opening for canning pears in New Zealand. The report and balance-sheet were adopted and the election of the four retiring directors, Messrs. T. C. Brash, Robertson, Torode and Tate, was confirmed. Remits were adopted affiliating the small Fruitgrowers’ and Tomato Growers’ Association.
By a small majority the conference adopted a remit that no parasites should be introduced into New Zealand for the eradication of the blackberry pest that will be detrimental to raspberries.
A resolution was passed urging the Government to impose a duty ol: 4d on imported Australian cherries.
