GREAT SOUTH ROAD
BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY MEETS
It was reported at a meeting of the Great South Road Beautifying Society, presided over by Mr. G, W. Hutchison on Tuesday evening, that the Papakura Town Board had commenced beautifying portions of the road under its control. Appreciation was expressed and it was decided to ask other local bodies to forward schemes to the society. The One Tree Hill Road Board is to be asked to give attention to the planting of trees on its section of the road this season. A letter will also be forwarded to the Manukau County Council suggesting that it obtain expert advice from the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture regarding the laying out of that portion of the road situated opposite Mr. Eliot. Davis’s farm. The New Zealand Redwood Forests, Ltd., was thanked for an offer of a number of redwood seedlings, and asked to keep the offer open. Intimation that beautifying work had been commenced on the portion of the road past Penrose was given by the chairman, who said R. and W. Hellaby, Ltd., were planting 400 trees this season, with a view to beautifying the whole of the stretch, which is bounded by industrial works. It was decided to approach the various landowners concerned with a request that they should carry out similar work. It was decided to preserve the old mile posts placed along the road when it was first constructed.
