FALSE DECLARATION
MARRIED MAN’S OFFENCE SAID HE WAS SINGLE (From Our Oxen Correspondent) HAMILTON, Wednesday. Found guilty in the Hamilton Supreme Court to-day of having made a false declaration with respect to his marriage, Leon Constant Francois Marie Janssens was remanded for sentence. Mr. H. T. Gillies, Crown solicitor, read a statement signed by Janssens, in which the latter stated that he married a woman at Tokomaru Bay on December 27, 1921. His wife shortly afterwards left him, and he had not seen her since, but he had been informed that she was in England. On December 21, 1927, he married another woman at Hamilton. He described himself as a bachelor, and as 30 years of age. Neither of these particulars was correct.
Evidence in support of the prosecution was given by the registrar of marriages at Hamilton, and Detective White. His Honor said Janssens had admitted that he had made incorrect statements to the registrar, and he had admitted having signed a declaration that the statements were true. He had therefore made a false declaration.
The judge directed the jury to return a verdict of guilty. The jury returned a verdict accordingly without retiring, and accused was remanded for sentence.
