IN THE MARKET PLACE
HEAVY BANANA SHIPMENT ORANGES SELL FREELY Sixteen thousand cases of bananas ex the Tofua came to a bare market this morning. The bulk of the shipment will be sold ex the wharf. An unexpected shortage of eggs was noted in the marts this morning and prices register a firming tendency. A decided drop in the price of bananas has taken place as a result of the Tofua’s shipment and repacks are now selling at ISs to 225. compared with. 25s to 30s at the close of last week. Heavy trading in oranges is recorded and prices as a result have a hardening tendency. The Waipahi with the next direct shipment is due back at this port toward the end of the month. Values for apples and pears are practically unaltered at late rates. Lemons are dull of sale at the moment. Supplies of local passions are practically exhausted. Ample supplies of most classes of vegetables continue to meet with a healthy winter demand. An unexpected check in the supply of eggs coming forward gave the market a firmer tone this morning.
