DROWNED BY HORSE
WHANGAPE FATALITY RESCUER HINDERED BY “JIBBER” (From Our Own Correspondent) HUNTLY, . Wednesday. An inquest was held at Rangiriri today by Mr. Ernest A. Jones, J.P., act-ing-coroner, into the circumstances surrounding the death by drowning of a native named Kaeliu, whose body was recovered from Lake Whangape yesterday, close to the scene of the fatality. Senior-Constable Ingram represented the police. Evidence was given by Tommy Teahu Poteni and Jerry Ngakete to the effect that deceased, accompanied by the two others, went in search of a young, unbroken horse, which was running on the shores of the lake. The horse rushed into the lake and commenced to swim away from the shore. Deceased stripped himself of clothing and set off after it on another horse. When he came abreast of the animal he jumped from the back of his own horse to that of the unbroken colt, '< which immediately became fractious. After riding it for about five chains, the colt sank, and deceased commenced to swim for the shore, a distance of about 10 chains, horse, set out to assist Kaihu, but horse, set out to assist Kaeho, but after going about chain his horse refused duty and returned to the shore. Kaeh then sank. No boats were available. A verdict was returned “That the deceased met his death by accidental drowning at Lake Whangape on May 27, 1928, while attempting to capture a young horse.”
