ONEHUNGA COUNCIL

STABLE IN CLARKE ROAD RESIDENTS PROTEST

“I am certainly averse to a stable with six stalls being situated so close as 13ft. to a dwelling house, and without concrete flooring and drainage,” wrote Dr. Hughes, District Health Officer, in a letter read to the Onehunga Borough Council at its meeting last evening. The stable, which is an old one, situated in Clarke Road, Onehunga, has been unoccupied for some time past. The owner, Mr. S. Bradley, now proposes to lease it to the owner of trotting horses, which has culled forth the protest of some 30 ratepayers in the locality, who petitioned the Health Officer to institute inquiries. The petitioners allege that the leasing of the stable in such a thickly-popu-lated area is likely to endanger public health. Dr. Hughes referred the petition to the council with the above minute. On the motion of the Mayor, a permit was granted provided the lessee complied with the by-laws by laying a concrete floor and a satisfactory system of drainage. A deputation from the Onehunga School Committee stated that the charge for water had increased tremendously during the past 18 months, and requested that the whole of the amount outstanding be written off, and that in future water for the schools be provided free. The question was referred to the Waterworks Committee for its report. Owing to a number of street lamps having failed in various parts of the borough during the past fortnight, and also to the poor quality of the lights generally, the power board Is to be asked for an explanation. A parking-place for motor-cars is to be established in Church Street East, on the east side adjoining the railway reserve. The district fund account is £2,622 in debit. A batch of vigorous protests and complaints regarding footpaths and damage by stormwater was referred to the Streets Committee. The Mangere Football Club expressed its dissatisfaction with the council’s decision in not providing it with a playing ground on the recreation reserve. The secretary in his letter contended that being a local club it was entitled to equal consideration with other clubs using the area. The question was referred to the Reserves Committee. Permission to make an entrance charge to the recreation reserve was granted the Manukau Rovers’ Football Club for its match against Grafton on Saturday, June 23. Accounts amounting to £1,625 were passed for payment.
