NIGHT EXPRESSES

SOUTH ISLAND TO HAVE SERVICE CHRISTCHURCH TO INVERCARGILL (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The South Island is to have night express trains after June 1. A train will leave Christchurch for Invercargill at 10.30 p.m. on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and will leave Invercargill for Christchurch at 6.40 p.m. on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. ■ “I have consulted with Mr. H. H. Sterling, the newly-appointed general manager of railways, regarding the South Island time-table with a view to meeting the public demand for an adequate service during the winter,” stated the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, to-day. After special investigation a new system has been evolved, the principal feature being the running of night passenger trains. It will be remembered that the introduction of the night limited express in the North Island, although introduced as an experiment, soon proved the most popular of services, not only bringing satisfaction to rail-users, but also helping to substantially agument the numbers of long-distance passengers carried on the Main Trunk. It is hoped similar results will follow the introduction of the South Island night expresses, which will commence running on June 10. North Island passengers for Southern stations arriving at Lyttelton by ferry seamer on Sunday morning will find the new train helpful. It will enable them to leave Christchurch on Sunday night for any of the principal main line stations instead of waiting until the following day, as they have to do at present. Two sleeping carriages will be provided on each of the night trains, in addition to ordinary first and second-class accommodation.

Under present conditions a business trip from Christchurch to DunediTi involves an expenditure in time of at least three whole business days. By utilising the night trains, however, it will be possible to complete the trip with a loss of business time of only one day. The improvement in mailing conditions will also be considerable.
