ANTWERP MERCHANT ROBBED OF DIAMONDS
£14,000 WORTH TAKEN AUDACIOUS THEFT ON STATION (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Received 12.56 p.m.) LONDON, Tuesday. Benjamin Tas, an Antwerp diamond merchant, crossed from Holland to London in a private cabin and carriage with uncut diamonds valued at £14,000 wrapped in 40 separate packets which he carried in a wallet beneath his double-breasted coat and overcoat. The wallet was also chained to his braces. When the train was pulling up on arrival in London he felt the wallet safe. He stepped out into the mist among the crowd and immediately met a woman who was awaiting him. He felt his pocket and exclaimed “Oh God, they have gone,” and collapsed. A link of the chain had been severed as though it had been cut. The audacious theft must have been carried out in less than half a minute.
