In the second round of the hardcourts tournament Miss Boyd defeated Mrs. Mallory, 3 —6, 6—H>, 6—L In the third round. Hunter defeated Kingsley, 6—2, 10—S, 6—4; Cohen defeated S. "Woods (U.S.A.). 6—l, 6 —o, 7 —5; Robson defeated Landry, 4 —6, 6 —3, 6—3, 6 —l. In the next round Anthony failed to win a single game from Bennett. Miss Boyd lost the tirst set to Mrs. Mallory through her opponent driving accurately and returning every ball. Miss Boyd won every game in the second set, Mrs. Mallory, obviously feeling the effect of the weather, tiring rapidly. After the interval Mrs. Mallory was much improved and led > —l. Miss Boyd, with fine driving, won the next two games. After long -allies Miss Boyd led 5—4, winning the match. P. O’Hara "Wood also defeated McReady through his consistent and accurate driving. Mile. Charnelet caused a surprise by defeating Miss Betty Xuthall in straight sets, although the latter was never at the top of her form, through an indisposition.
