THE MEN OF THE MERCANTILE MARINE.—“To a very large extent,” says the London “Times,” “the story of the growth of the British mercantile marine, and the part which it has played in the struggle for the commerce of the world is in fact that s :ory of the rise and growth of Great Britain and the Empire. Nor is it only to the actual seamen of the merchant navy and fishing fleets tha.t the country owes in so large a measure its position in the world. Without the efforts of the men on shore who from the earliest times have designed and built the craft in which they sailed, and the great companies by whose capital and enterprise the merchant fleets of later days have been commissioned and launched, there could have been no ships, no sailors, and no maritime empire. They, too, have risked and suffered heavy losses in this and other wars. They, too, are the creators of Great Britain’s sea power; and they, no less than those who have faced the battle and the breeze, belong to the personnel of the merchant na\ y and fishing fleets who are to-day honoured and thankcj by the King.”
