TECHNICAL SCHOOL WANTED PAEROA REQUEST DECLINED A Paeroa deputation recently waited upon the Minister of Education, th€ llon. R. A. Wright, and urged the neec of a technical school in Paeroa. Yesterday a reply was received from the Minister saying that there are several towns in the Dominion which have prior rights, and he regretted there was no hope at present of Paeroa getting a technical school. He thought that high schools in such places were sufficient at present. HAURAKI FIXES SPEEDS RATES STRUCK FOR YEAR Councillor E. L. Walton was unanimously re-elected chairman of the Hauraki Plains County Council on Wednesday. A special order was made amending the by-laws referring to the speeds of motor vehicles. The limit in open country was fixed at 35 miles an hour, through townships 20 miles an hour, and past schools, 15 miles an hour. West Water Supply (to be struck later). Realising that a considerable sum in licence fees was being lost, the council decided to appoint a full-time inspector. The constitution of the AwaitiNetherton Water Supply District was authorised, and the engineer was instructed to go further into the details of the scheme. THAMES REDUCES RATES ECONOMICAL ADMINISTRATION The Mayor of Thames, Mr. W. Bongard, announced at a meeting of the Thames Borough Council last evening that a sare suit of the practice of severe economy the total rate for this year had been decreased to Is 7d in the pound, as compared with Is Sd in the pound last year. There is no mention, however, in the schedule of rates, as to the borough’s liability in respect to the Thames Harbour scheme, the cost of which was guaranteed by the Borough of Thames several years ago.

OTAHUHU ORPHANS SUCCESSFUL OPENING NIGHT The opening meeting of the Otahuhn Orphans’ Club, held in the Public Hall on Tuesday night, was an enjoyable ard successful function. Thirty-three new members have joined the club this year. Fast-President Bro. A. B. Whyte installed president Bro. W. W. Massey for the season, and the past rresident was the recipient of an emblem from the hands of the newly-installed president. The following contributed to a very enjoyable musical programme; Vocal solos, Bros. J. Simpson. Elliott. Seaton and A. E. Allen; elocution. Bro. Rex Yates; ’cello solo, Bro. Moore. The efforts of the orchestra were well received. Bro. J. Hutton acted as accompanist. Among - the official visitors were: Bro. J. Crawford, president cf the associated kindred clubs, and secretary of the Auckland Club; Bro. H. S. W. King, president of the Devonport Club; Bro. R. Buchanan, president, and Bro. C. A. Osborne, secretary of the Onehunga Club; Bro. O’Lochlin, president, and Bro. Short, secretary of the Pakekohe Club; Bro. J. W. Lethbridge, president, and Bro. Dawson, secretary of the Birkenhead and North cote Club; Bro. W. K. Francis, president, and Bro. S. L. Anderson, secretary of the Papakura Club. Accompanying them were many past presidents a nd executive officers ot the respective clubs. WAIUKU SOLDIERS MEET RETURNED MEN'S REUNION The annual meeting of the Waiuku Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Wednesday evening, the president, Lieutenant-Col-onel 11. Aldred, presiding over a large attendance. The report and balance-sheet were very satisfactory in all respects. The report showed an increase in membership, and dealt with the work done by the association i::i assisting returned men. The gross proceeds from the sale of poppies amounted to £Bl 17s 3d, which amount, after deducting the cost of poppies, goes toward relieving distress and unemployment among the returned men in the district. The election of officers resulted: President, Lieutenant-Colonel M. Aldnd; vice-president, Mr. W. J. Garvie; secretary, Mr. G. V. Williams; treasurer, Dr. C. E. Howden; auditor, Mr. W. S. Colbeck; committee, Messrs. F. Knight, M. G. Brown, J. McQuire, G. O’Hara, A W. M. Ohlson, D. Lawton and SergeantMajor J. G. Milne. After the annual meeting the annual reuion was held and was a very successful function. An excellent musical and elocutionary programme was given by several artists from Auckland, and their items were repeatedly encored.
